Other Food Borne Infections

Other food bourne infections can't cross the placenta and damage the baby directly but it is advisable to take extra precautions while you are pregnant to avoid getting food poisoning of any kind.

To minimise the chance of you becoming infected with other food-borne organisms follow the rules listed below:

  • Do not drink unpasteurised milk (‘green top' milk) including goats and sheeps milk unless it has been boiled for at least two minutes.
  • Use caution when buying unwrapped foods eg. cooked meats and prepared salads. If scrupulous food handling guidelines have not been followed these foods can easily become contaminated.
  • Avoid raw shell fish eg. oysters and take care with other shell fish such as prawns, cockles and mussels. Buy them packaged and stamped with a use by date and take care when eating shell fish outside the home.
