Foods containing fat:

margarine, butter, other spreading fats and low fat spreads, cooking oils, oil based salad-dressings, mayonnaise, cream, chocolate, crisps, biscuits, pastries, cakes, puddings, ice cream, rich sauces and gravies.

Foods containing sugar:

soft drinks, sweets, jam and sugar as well as foods such as cakes, puddings, biscuits, pastries and ice cream.

Importance

To stay healthy we need some fat in our diets. What is important is the type of fat. Try to cut down on food that is high in saturated fat like the ones mentioned above, and have foods that are rich in unsaturated fat instead, such as vegetable oils (including sunflower, rapeseed and olive oil) oily fish, avocados, nuts and seeds.

  • This is a lot of fat: 20g fat or more per 100g, 5g of saturates or more per 100g
  • This is a little fat: 3g fat or less per 100g, 1g saturates or less per 100g
  • This is a lot of sugar: 10g sugars or more per 100g
  • This is a little sugar: 2g sugars or less per 100g
